IF-refrain-UPDATE restraint. I worked backwards on this one....I did the color before the linework. Not sure of the results yet, but it loosened my color work up, which is what I wanted.

A few new sketches that I'm going to have to refrain from finishing until some client work is taken care of.

I am the queen of instant gratification....I have no self-control or restraint....chances are they'll be worked on sooner rather than later. <grin>

IF-energy-UPDATE (and IF-tail)

Final. Begrudgingly posted.

A friend of mine messaged me after the IF-tail prompt went up and (with just a smidge of mockery...just a smidge) wrote that I was going to finish this piece and was going to post this for IF Tail (because...kites have tails).

The message came just as I had sat down to start rendering this piece to post on IF-tail...because, kites have tails.

I was gobsmacked...and a little indignant that I had become that predictable.

My first instinct was to NOT to go to final and NOT post it...because, you know, so they wouldn't be right....and send back a smug message saying that I was never considering doing anything of the sort.

But, they WERE right...I was going to do EXACTLY what they had said.

So, it's posted, for IF-Tail.....because kites have tails. And, I am a lucky girl to have friends that know me so very, very well.

Wasn't able to get to final render.....hoping to jump back on this tonight....Ben is kind of begging for a good render. Dying to get into the sky.

Here is the flatted color piece with the basic color palette...<and a few tweeks to the layout....wanted more sky> step, the fun part, all of the shading and whatnot....fingers crossed I'll be updating this post soon.

A whole lot of random.

I really liked these characters, so I did a second piece with the same kids. I originally did a full color render of the first image....still not pleased with the final results. I'm thinking of taking these both just to black and white....or just leaving them as is...not sure yet.

Also....Klytus, I'm bored....<I was quoting Flash Gordon the whole day I ended up sketching this>

....and, of course.....because you can't draw just Ming.

Don't know if anything will end up in final, but they were fun to work on.

Only got to sketches this week...and it was moustache before I knew it....but, YAY moustache! Man, I hope I have time to play with that one!

Have a good week!

IF-totem + IF-together

YAY color!.....everything came together. <grin>

Lots of bears lately. I default to bears and elephants when I don't like how I'm drawing....they help to bring me out of a funk. If I can't draw anything else, I usually can draw a bear or an elephant.

Sketch and inking...working on the color now. Fingers crossed I can get it done before Friday.

So, I had the perfect post for hidden...I am all kinds of excited.

Over the last 6 months, I've had the chance to do a bunch of color Hidden Picture illustrations for Highlights....I am beyond thrilled! Illustrations for a publication that everybody knows....I can tell people I'm an illustrator and they know the publication....and HIGHLIGHTS! That's like the gateway drug for me! YAY! It has been an absolute blast.

But...they aren't published yet so I have to hold off on posting those. <I soon as I can!>

I had beyond an ass of a day, I took some time to do a full blown color illustration just for fun....been a while since I've been able to do that. Made me feel TONS better. Plus, I love the challenge of a one day start to finish piece.

Back to work tomorrow. <grin>

waving and IF lush sketch

Waving HI!

I keep thinking that I'm posting things, only to find that I haven't.

Summer was nothing but hectic, and fall is looking to be the same way. I have to remind myself that I still need to draw selfishly, not just for clients. The problem is that I do like getting paid, so, as much as I want to just sketch, work work has to come first.

Not complaining....nothing better than getting paid for doing stuff you like to do!

I need more hours in the day and a hand that doesn't get tired. <maybe a good kick in the ass too...just to get me kickstarted again>

Here was my IF....I really wanted to take it to color, because since it is lush, the whole thing was going to be pink. <grin>

This was a quickie drawing for Duck Duck Gorilla that ended up as a thank you for dragging my hippo cards all around Comic Con.

I have a really bad habit of drawing things that are my friends' ideas. This is a textbook case.

I don't do it on purpose, and I always feel bad afterwards....but, for some reason, their ideas always seem better than mine and when I am mindless sketching.

I try and chalk it up to me sketching better than I describe things...but, I think it might be just laziness and their ideas are already in my head. <grin> I always send the drawings off to the offended friend and never use them for myself....<except now and even here, I asked permission.....because I ask and apologize for everything...part of my epic awkwardness>

So, the bright side of me swiping my friends' ideas? Presents.

Always atone for your sins. <grin>

....and is the long story of how I ended up with a finished illustration of ducks and gorillas. The End.

I love him. I've been calling him Edwin.....I think I'll be drawing a lot more of him.

off to ComicCon....

.....well, I'm not, but my all four of my superheroified hippos are....kind of like a strange "flat stanley" project.

They will be happily tucked into my pal John's <thanks John> bag....along with a piece for his upcoming show in LaJolla....if you are close in September, you should stop in. I'm in awe of his vector skills. Simply in awe.

Let me know if you spot one if you are there......would love to know where they end up.

(Can I tell you how great is it to collaborate with someone who lives in California and is going to this show so I don't have to? Everyone should get themselves one.)

I just realized that I double posted in IF this week......because I am some kind of a moron....oh well, I guess this makes up for the weeks I haven't posted. Sorry about that! <grin>

Traveling. In style.

finalish (still needs a background, but I'm stumped)

IF-I miss it.

I miss Illustration Friday.

I haven't participated in the last few weeks.....the prompts just have done nothing for me....either a noun <which is never the most fun thing to draw> or something way too topical or political for this girl. I should stretch myself and press forward, but fun drawings shouldn't be work. <grin>

Fingers crossed for a nice happy adjective or verb next week! I want to come back!

another promo idea

Got to thinking that my kind of obscure superhero hippos that I love might be kind of limiting my audience. (I am going to print some up for Comic Con...but, a small run)

Here's the second idea I was working on this week.

I like it....not quite in love with it yet....for sure not committed to it enough to spend money on printing for it. It's close....closer than the hippos. I have another idea, so we'll see. At this rate, I'll just keep padding the portfolio and never print anything. <grin>...because I'm cheap and picky.

But, yay! More drawings. <haven't been thrilled with the IF prompts lately, so these are filling the gaps until we hit a word I like>

new postcards

Been playing with some images for new promo postcards. Can't choose which one to print.....would love some feedback...because, you know, you guys are awesome and stuff.

Hi. My name is Jennifer and I can't draw women.

Admitting I have a problem is the first step towards a solution, right?

I can only draw women when they are old and have cute round cheeks and floaty chins...they are great to draw....but, every woman I draw can't be older with floaty chins. I always default to men.

Right now, I'm kind of fascinated with bustles. I have been for years....ever since Slue Foot Sue bounced off of Widowmaker to the moon while she was wearing one....I've always wanted to draw that.

So on my quest to draw better women, I'm going back to about the 1890's to try sketching some women instead of always defaulting to men.....maybe the extreme shapes will help.

Have a lot of stuff with children that I'm working on right now, but nothing I can share (yet)...I will, as soon as I can!

Meanwhile, this is an older piece, but one of my favourites......Mrs. Thwing's Third Grade Class.

They are supposed to be cute woodland creatures drinking "Little Hugs." Instead, they look like they have a cache of grenades. Not quite as sweet as I had hoped. <grin> Color would help.

IF-tension (updated IF-liquid)

Because I have no patience and am a slave to instant gratification....which can cause tension with my collaborator (see...I tied it in!)....he told me I could post his designs here rather than waiting for him to post them over at duckduckgorilla. YAY!

These are what he did with my sketches....kind of some brilliant design, no? There is nothing like working with someone who makes your work better.

Although my favourite of the designs has nothing to do with my work....pure design work.

Sketches and inkings are below...

In my pantheon, Tomie dePaola is the top of the heap.

Strega Nona was my first book report. Met him from afar in first grade (a young author's conference...which were so much fun) was the first time I ever even thought that drawing could be a job. I've been hooked ever since.

My daughter is just as bad. This is her at preschool dressed as Strega Nona for Halloween <the year before she was Ian Falconer's Olivia, the year after, Lauren Child's Lola....all her own choices....because she is awesome>.

It only seemed right that this prompt was a dePaola tribute piece. This is my love letter. Thank you Mr. dePaola.
