A joke sketch for a friend of mine....I'm not taking it any further than a silly little sketch, but it works for the prompt and makes me laugh.

Whiskers equal facial hair. Santa is the king of facial hair. I started thinking that he's a rather dapper lad and would have experimented with his beard and mustache as the fashions came and went.

I'm a sucker for period costumes, research, and character design (none of those pesky backgrounds). I had a blast with these. If they ever go to color they will all be variations of Santa with red suits and white beards. I don't think they'll stay together as a group, I just put them together for easy viewing.

But, right now, I'm at odds with my color work...I just can't make it work. So, I'm boycotting color for a while. Maybe the silent treatment will bring it back around.

I'm cheating. I'm reposting Space......well...because I like this drawing and I don't know if I'll have a chance to finish the Zoom.

So...zooming about in space.

Happy lots of turkey for sister decided to have ham this year.

Love the pencils.

Love the inking.

Wrestling with the color....but, in the true spirit of this being a sketchblog, I'm posting the failures.

color trial 1-meh

color trial 2-still meh.

I'm flogging the color to death. It needs simple, clean watercolor Quentin Blake washes. Not my forte, but maybe the third time will be the charm...I'll keep you posted if I give the color another go.

Thanks for letting me ramble....

...The saga continues.....

I took it to greyscale so that I could built my contrasts....and that helped me to get a handle on this piece...

Finally, I think this is passable. Or at least closer to what I wanted it to look like. Thanks for the help Jenn and Mit....the monochromatic worked. I think I've flogged this piece enough...whew! Onto the next one.

Not IF...just me sketching

I'm just putting this up here so I don't lose it...she's just a scrap of paper and I throw way too much out when I clean up. I dig this little character...I have no story for her or time to work on her now...but I've got to come up with something for her. So much more me than the super sweet duo I put up for the prompt!

What's black and white and red all over? This shy panda....oh and there's a giraffe too.

I'm in the middle of a huge project. yay!

It's styleguide, being the constant worrier that I am....I'm afraid I'm going to get sucked into the styleguide and lose my own drawings in the process. Now that I'm well into the project, I'm going to do my best to post sketches every help keep me loose and save my sanity while I work on other people's artwork. They'll be rough, but I'll be drawing, and hopefully I'll have a bunch of new images that will be ready to color when I have the time...bonus!

Here's my haunt. <The black lines are me making sure with some quick pen strokes that my lines still make sense to me.>

Got around to inking tonight...

Started to play with some loose color. Not really feeling it yet, but I like posting the progress.

So, the light blue hippo has to submerge for a bit. I'll come up for air soon...

I'm hoping I'll get around to a new piece this week...but, booked up is what my schedule far.

But, I did get a chance to play with a new fun color technique this week. Lots of fun textures and washes sent from my pal over at <thanks John>. I love presents!

So, I'm popping that up with the hopes of getting to try it again before the week is up. Fingers crossed!

moonlight piggies too...

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

I drew pigs. I love pigs. Their little crooked tails are all kinds of fantastic...and they have such dainty little feet prancing along. I'm dying to go to color on this, but been nothing but busy for the last few days...I'm not complaining...this glass is half full AND it's full of whiskey!

Sláinte! Salute! Kanpai!

The sketch....

....and the inking....
....and hopefully, I'll get around to color...fingers crossed!

Helium and cats don't mix.

I have no idea why this was the first image I thought of when I saw the prompt....maybe too many stories about 40 pound cats and 75 pound doxies on the news....It has been making me laugh all day.

...and final...pop!

This is not from my imagination. My friend Billy Beck came up with this one when he was about 8. He decided that his toothfairy wore a pinstriped suit and carried a briefcase full of teeth. The image has haunted me for 30 some odd years.

Here's the sketch....I originally had delusions of doing a full blown, full page illustration. Then, I realized that I had no desire to draw the kid.

...and the inking....
.....and final.
Had a chance to play with one of my favourite artist friends and all around good guy this week....he's over at

I covet his color technique.

IF story in which Jenn starts at one point and comes back to that same point.

I started watching "Inherit the Wind". A guy in the opening scene sounded just like Slim Pickens. I went to IMDB to see if it was him, it wasn't. Read all about Slim Pickens instead. He was an actual cowboy and is in the rodeo hall of fame. Forgot that I hadn't checked the IF prompt. Saw TALL. Thought Tall Tales. Went straight to Pecos Bill, because I love Pecos Bill. Pecos Bill on the Cyclone is my favourite of his stories. Pecos Bill riding a Cyclone had me looking up rodeo reference photos. Rodeo reference photos took me to Slim Pickens on the bomb in "Dr. Strangelove". "Dr. Strangelove" took me back to IMDB to of course read all about that movie. When I got there, the page was still up for "Inherit the Wind". I remembered that I was watching that movie, and turned it back on and started my sketch.

My life is like a deranged "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie"

Anyhoo.....Here's the sketch.

....and the inking......

.....and the final.

Hope you like it....the process was way too much fun on this one.

This is my third grade teacher Mrs. Twing. She wore cateye glasses and a big beehive hairdo. She was woefully out of style for 1979-80 and I thought she was fantastic. I am the short one on the end with the dark hair. I am still the short one on the end with the dark hair.

Here's the sketch.

...and the inking....

...and the final.

Been a busy month. Lots of fun work and some sore eyes and tired hands from tight deadlines. Very happy to have some time to post an image again.

Here's the sketch.

.....and the inking....

and the final.

This is a piece I've been wanting to do for a while glad it fit the prompt on a week when I had the time to play with it.

Here's the sketch....

....and the inking.....

....and the final color. Been playing with this technique now for the last few pieces, and I'm really liking the finished's hoping it keeps working.

Here's the sketch.

...and here's the inking.

I'm working on the color right now, but I wanted to get something up before Friday. I'll post the color when I finish it up.

Finished! Here's the color....

Thursday, June 21, 2012

This is the sketch I was working on for secret. I had the idea and I just wouldn't let go of it...I kept reworking and reworking, but I couldn't get it to quite work the way I wanted. Something about it just isn't right.

Then, after trying to ink it, I realized that I had jumped too quickly to cartoon and the proportions were off. I love Shire horses, but their feathered feet always throw me off. So, late last night I went back to source and did a quicky sketch of a Percheron horse in full tack.....keeping it in the correct proportions, but still staying stylized and cartoonish. I think I may go back to this one and ink and color after I get some on the paying work out of the way.....really like the face.

Sorry for the rambling.....I tend to do that. Can't wait to see the next prompt and what comes from that one.

Been a super busy, nothing but working and working, crazy hectic month...HOORAY!

This is an older piece...but it fits the prompt. It's the lead piece in my portfolio and it's the direction I want to take my illustrations moving forward. I like every line having a reason and keeping the inking simple, then rendering things out and using collage to finish it up. I need to do more like this.....maybe next prompt.

Here's hoping to a slower month to be able to devote a little more time to working on more stuff like this...but, got to keep the bills paid so I can do more things like this.

Worked up this sketch and wanted to try and refine my digital inking.

But, I didn't do quite enough work on the sketch...too loose and I didn't work out all of the kinks that I needed too. Once I started inking, I realized it was like a vortex of weird tangents where the hind end of the dog the girl's foot and the box all came together. I'm on a tangent kick right now, a friend started pointing them out to me, and now I'm obsessed with them...good and bad.

This one is bad....kind of a black hole of tangents and I feel like it is the focal point of the illustration instead of the interaction between the two characters. Anyhoo, here's the inking when I realized the vortex.

I like how clean the inking is, love the characters (this has happened way too many times at my house) and I'm going to go back (when time and projects allow) and remove the puzzle box, add the girl's hand and move the dog slightly to the left. Then I want to take this one to color. I'll post whenever I can finish it. about tangents....jeesh....that was one wordy post!

IF-on hold right now

So, for anybody checking in...I've had a couple of big projects that have had me tied up for the last few weeks. They've been a lot of fun, but have been sucking my time away. Gotta keep the coffers filled so I can do this fun stuff!

I'm hoping to get back into the swing of IF in the next couple of, don't give up on me yet!

A friend of mine was joking about his next project being a polar bear eating vanilla ice cream in a snowstorm...and I haven't been able to get the image out of my head, and it worked with the prompt. (This one's for you Barry!)

And, after that, I started thinking about other images that I could do with just shades of colors. Pretty pleased with them overall.....I think the Rhino folding dingy laundry in a drab room during a drizzle is my favorite.....but I like the Black Bear playing his oboe at midnight too...toss up. Hope you enjoy!
